5 Unbelievably Mainstream Actors Who Signed Up For Bollywood Horror Films

Director Faisal Saif once told us, “Bollywood mainstream doesn’t support the horror film industry, there wouldn’t be a ‘Sultan’. There would be a ‘Sultan ka Bhoot’ (The Ghost of Sultan’.  That second part of the interview is yet to be put up here, and you can read the first part of the interview here. This Listing is a unique one. Bollywood mainstream did shy away from horror films. Anushka Sharma is the only actor to have acted in a ghost film at her peak. Mind you, that wasn’t a horror film, it was just a film about a ghost. That set us thinking, did any other mainstream Bollywood actors flirt with the dark side, either when they had nothing to lose or when they had achieved everything? We bring you the list: >>

Juhi Chawla (Bhootnath) (Paheli)

Chawla followed good buddy SRK in the cameo in ‘Bhoothnath’. She added the needed star power with the other people listed here, Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan.

Rani Mukerji (Paheli)

Rani Mukerji starred in this well made film that was based on an ancient folklore. It was about a ghost who fell in love with a woman, and lives with her for four years as her husband. It is only after her real husband returns that trouble starts.  The film didn’t do well at the box office.

Shah Rukh Khan (Chamatkar, Paheli, Bhootnath, Karan Arjun)

No, none of these films were the screamy kind of horror films that we have on this website. But ‘Chamatkar’ was a legit blockbuster, ‘Paheli’ was a cameo and so was ‘Bhootnath’, but it stirred up a sequel. We all know what ‘Karan Arjun was.

Salman Khan (Suryavanshi)

A reincarnation film but with a ghost and the ghost was the past lover of Salman Khan’s character, who was a prince. This film is the first medieval film that Salman acted in, before he made the magnum opus ‘Veer’.

Amitabh Bachchan (Hum Kaun Hai, Darna Zaroori Hai, Aks. Bhootnath)

Yes, even the superstar of the millennium has done his time in the dark side. Out of all these, the most unknown film would be ‘Hum Kaun Hai’, which also starred Dharmendra and Dimple Kapadia. Apart from that, Amitabh has acted in films like RGB’s ‘Darna Zaroori Hai’ and Aks, which was more of a psychological thriller.

Honorable Mention: Jaya Prada in ‘Maa’ and Meenakshi Sheshadri in ‘Bees Saal Baad’.
