Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi – Two for the price of one

 

 

If there’s any genre that doesn’t get the love that it should get, it’s the suspense genre. There’s only a clump of suspense films in Bollywood.  Very few of them are successful. Tough Bollywood has been around for more than six decades, we can count only six suspense films that  broke the bank at the box office. Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi is not one of them. Here’s our take on the film.

Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi Synopsis:

The movie begins with the introduction of an evil Thakur, one who rapes women, loots money and doesn’t tolerate an hoodwinking employee. One dark night, he is lured into the forest after being convinced that the spirit of a girl that he sexually assaulted is around. That Thakur is killed, leaving behind three people with a motive, a widow and a brother.  The case is transferred to a CBI inspector, who  has a dark secret in his past.

Nothing irritates you more than a film that changes track in the interview. YRPHA is a classic case of what could have been. The film begins well, with the right suspense and drama. It takes weird, convoluted twists as it progresses, actually introducing three new characters somewhere after the interval.

However, it is good to see that the film-makers decided to tackle the subject of haunted places being not actually haunted and people taking undue advantage of people’s superstitions. This is a one of a kind film for Bollywood actually. It’s a pity that the screenplay turns from a good suspense film to just two people chasing the criminals through the night – routinely.

The production values are good, but watching the film, you feel that the script is a bit out of depth. You also get a glimpse of what the film could be, and that is what irritates the viewer more than anything.  Basically, the film turns from a ghost story to a whodunnit to finally a simple chase-the-person film. We wonder if this was the original script of the film, or did they change it sometime in the middle. You also get to see some great ’80s production values, like green hills, the actor and actress dancing in a garden that has no horizon and sunglasses that make men as well as women dressed to kill.

The direction leaves a lot to be desired too. There are several eavesdropping sequences, something that a suspense fan would consider not actually the best way to solve a mystery.  Watching the film, we also wonder whether the romantic track between  the dead man’s son and a woman was force fed to make the film slightly more longer than it already was.

This Bollywood suspense film is a revelation in itself for several reasons. Jeetendra, who plays the main lead in the film, is smoking or lighting a cigarette in most of the sequences. He also lights up in the police chowki. It would be interesting to whether the entire film will be shown with a ‘smoking is injurious’ heading throughout the film, even if it was shown on television.  Though, it is good to see that the comedy sequences  – which are completely out of place anyway – aren’t corny. There’s been this allegation against horror films in the 80s and 90s about their comedy sequences being misogynistic and laden with double entendre. Thankfully, Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi doesn’t go down that path.

But all is not lost, though. You do get to see Jeetendra is some of the classiest outfits that side of ’90s. One look at him and you’d think that this guy could carry off any outfit – the gaudier the better. There’s Meenakshi Sheshadri doing one of her dance routines. She’s considered to be one of the best dancers that Bollywood saw, so that’s always good.
