Mouni Roy is a true-blue, legit Television star. She is the titular character in one of the most successful television series in India at the moment, Naagin. Now, the story of Naagin is straight out of an eighties horror/sci-fi film – an icchadari naagin (shapeshifting snake) wants to avenge her dead male snake companion. Truth be told, this has been the story of almost every shape-shifting film. In fact, the story is a direct lift of the first franchise in Bollywood, a film of the same name, starring Sridevi, Rishi
Truth be told, this has been the story of almost every shape-shifting film. In fact, the story is a direct lift of the first franchise in Bollywood, a film of the same name, starring Sridevi, Rishi Kapoor and Amrish Puri. With so many eighties trope being rejected outright by the millennials, why is this one working? You know what we think makes this work? This:
Even the most hardened Bollywood journalist will agree thatMouni Roy is one of the most strikingly beautiful actresses to have ever hit the screen. There was this Hollywood story about someone asking what a particular actress has and the person answered, “She has ‘it’.” And ladies and gentlemen, Mouni Roy has it.
A face that’s drives you towards it, Mouni looks like a Grecian warrior who’s just walked out of a painting. On camera, she has a grace that puts her right up there with Bollywood royalty. Mouni is one of those women whom you want to wrap around in a sterile cocoon while she’s outside – she is that stunning. And with two seasons behind her and another already commissioned, there’s no question that she has a talent for the camera. Her camera presence is at an insane level. Today, there can be nobody who has more charisma than Salman, Shah Rukh, Hrithik Roshan and Ranveer Singh. And Mouni has faced the camera with Salman. The camera was equally magnetic towards Mouni if not more. That’s the thing that propels you to super-stardom.
But that’s not what this article is about. This article is about the image that Mouni has cultivated. In a country where people who play Mythological characters have had awkward situations where people ask for their blessings, Mouni is working towards breaking that cliche. She is careful, surely, cultivating an image of a person who plays a character. Mouni’s a breath of fresh air because unlike someone else, each and every part of her life is not carefully parceled and made into a PR juggernaut.
Bollywood fans have not been kind to actors playing Historical and Mythological characters. Deepshika Chikalia, who played Sita in Ramayana could never break the mould and become an actress. Roopa Ganguly, who played Draupadi, could never break free of that character. Divyanka Tripathi is never seen in an avatar different from the one we see in her series.
Mouni Roy is beyond that. She plays one of the most cliched characters in Bollywood history on screen and posts photos of her being a beach bum on Twitter. Take it from us, that’s the most courageous thing a TV actress can do in India today.
