David Bruckner’s The Ritual premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in the Midnight Madness section. It generated quite a bit of interest and now, Netflix has picked it up for a whopping $4.75 million. No word on whether this will be a Netflix exclusive. The Big N has paid this amount for the film’s worldwide rights outside UK.
The Ritual is about four friends who hike through the Scandinavian wilderness, post the death of their mutual friend. One wrong turn introduces them to an ancient evil that they should now combat. Though the grain of the script has been noticed earlier in horror and psychological thrillers, I think the aspect of four friends in mourning being haunted is a nice touch.
The Ritual is written by Joe Barton, who earlier worked on Humans and is adapted from Adam Nevill’s award-winning novel. It stars Rafe Spall, Robert James Collier, Arsher Ali and Sam Troughton.
